Meet Sunita: “My life started changing and I am not going to quit improving.”

After relocating from India to the U.S. with her family, Sunita faced the challenge of adapting to a new culture and language. Determined to fully integrate into her new home, Sunita made learning English a top priority.

For Sunita, learning English is not just about communication—it’s about building a future. Her immediate goals include passing her U.S. citizenship exam and better understanding customers at her job at a major retail company. But, her ambitions extend far beyond that.

“My current goals for learning English are basically to integrate myself in the U.S. culture and pass my U.S. citizenship exam,” Sunita says. “However, my long-term goals are to study some professional courses for my career development.

To kick off her English learning journey, Sunita took advantage of a learning partnership between EnGen and her employer, which offers access to our English upskilling platform as part of their employee benefits package. EnGen has been a game-changer for Sunita. One of her most significant achievements so far has been passing a written test at her local DMV, a step toward gaining independence in her new country. With her learner’s permit secured, she has now begun driving lessons—something she couldn’t have done without improving her English.

Sunita’s work in the retail sector means that strong English skills are essential to promote on-the-job communication, safety, productivity and customer experience. Thanks to EnGen, she now interacts more confidently with customers and colleagues, making her work experience more rewarding and enjoyable.

“Learning English has been very helpful to perform my job better,” she says. “I work in the retail sector where I deal with the customers regularly. Now, I communicate better with my colleagues and customers.”

In the long term, she hopes to enroll in professional courses that will advance her career. With EnGen’s on-demand English learning platform and courses aligned to more than 170 high-demand careers, she’s making steady progress toward both short-term and long-term success.

For Sunita, the interactive aspects of EnGen’s platform stand out the most.

“My favorite part of the EnGen platform is the group classes where we communicate within the group. The word bank is very helpful during my English learning. Writing homework is very helpful as well.”

At home, English has become an integral part of her daily life. With her children primarily speaking English, she has found it easier to connect with them. Now, she not only understands them better but also actively helps her kindergartener with homework—a milestone she is incredibly proud of.

In this way, Sunita is like the 3 in 4 learners that told us that as a result of using EnGen they could navigate life better, are more engaged with their community, and help their family more.

Sunita’s advice for those just beginning their English learning journey is simple: embrace the process like a child learning a new skill. “I have not been shy and started learning English like a kid,” she says. “I am not at a very advanced level yet, but I will never stop learning. Take small steps and build upon it.”

Sunita’s story is a testament to the power of determination and the right support system. With EnGen, she has not only improved her English but also gained the confidence to pursue bigger dreams.

“My life started changing and I am not going to quit improving.”
