Meet Tanzima: From Associate to Manager With English Upskilling

“My goal has always been to move forward in my career. I knew I needed to improve my English to help with communication.”

Originally from India, Tanzima is a native Hindi speaker. When she moved to Canada for marriage, she realized that communicating in English was a challenge with new neighbors, as well as colleagues in her new job as an associate at Amazon.

To achieve her goal of moving into a leadership position at work, Tanzima enrolled in Amazon’s Career Choice program. Career Choice is an educational and skills training benefit for Amazon employees that pre-pays tuition for English language programs and industry certifications.

“I wanted to improve my writing and English pronunciation,” she says. That’s where Amazon Career Choice’s partnership with EnGen came in. The EnGen platform connects learners with both English and job-related vocabulary and skills through online learning opportunities.

Taking EnGen courses like”English for Job Interviews,” “Emails: Requests and Questions,” and “Phone Calls and Appointments,” which helped her learn applicable job skills, Tanzima says one of the biggest appeals of EnGen is its flexibility. “You don’t have to take special days off to use the program and you can join classes whenever you are free.”

EnGen’s flexibility and self-paced approach made it convenient for Tanzima to quickly improve her skills. In fact, she spent 41 hours on the platform, including taking six private classes and 18 group classes. EnGen offers online sessions with 24/7 scheduling opportunities to make it convenient for working adults to get the instruction they need when they want it. It’s in these group classes where Tanzima started to build real connections with other learners.

“I thought I would prefer going to more private classes. But I really enjoyed attending the group classes. There are some really great teachers who gave me a chance to speak about myself and hear others’ stories, which I really enjoyed.”

These interactions with other learners helped Tanzima feel more assured in her skills. “I’ve built a lot more confidence in my writing skills and pronunciation.”

Tanzima isn’t alone. Our recent survey of workers who use EnGen found that 95% of learners improved their confidence in using English. And 93% report saving time at work as a result of improved job skills.

This new-found confidence in her language skills has helped Tanzima advance her career. She is now an area manager at Amazon. Tanzima says her improved writing and job skills have made her a much better communicator, which is vital to managing a team. Tanzima is among the  87% of EnGen learners who reported achieving a career goal, like a promotion, at work.

Having moved into her leadership position, Tanzima is now considered an alum of Career Choice and EnGen.  Yet she continues to be  a huge proponent of both programs.

“I recommend EnGen to all of the associates who work under me.”
