Welcome, Dallas College Instructors!

Meet EnGen

EnGen is an online learning platform for those who want to improve their English skills. Students can access the platform 24/7 through their computer, tablet or mobile phone. The content is tailored to students’ proficiency level and is self-paced, so they manage their own schedule and review content that is relevant for their personal and professional English learning goals. The platform includes career-aligned content, vocabulary review, a pronunciation practice tool, a grammar guide, proficiency assessments, and achievement tests at the end of every unit.

Please read this page in its entirety, watch the videos, and review the documents to learn how to use EnGen, thank you!

Getting Started

#1 - Activate Your EnGen Account

You will have two accounts with EnGen, a demo account of the student platform and access to the Admin Portal where you can see student progress. You will receive a welcome email from EnGen to activate your student demo account. It will appear as if you are a student, but that is intentional so you can learn how to use the platform. Please fully activate your account, which will then give you access to our Admin Portal where you will find student progress and test scores.

#2 - Learn About EnGen

Learn about EnGen by reviewing a recent Dallas College instructor training session. This is everything you need to know about EnGen!

Review EnGen’s course list here. Course outlines are in column C. Instructors can’t assign courses to students, they have to enroll in courses themselves from the “Catalog” tab.

Please refer to the FAQ below and EnGen’s Top 10 Resources for Admins, Teachers, and Coaches if you still have questions about getting started and using both platforms.

#3 - Help Students Get Started

Send your class roster to your Distance Learning Coach who will enroll your students on EnGen. Help Students activate their EnGen account soon after class starts.

First, students need to take the 40-minute Proficiency Assessment to determine their English level, which will inform what content they can access on EnGen. Next, they need to complete either the Welcome Beginners or Welcome to EnGen orientation course (they will get one or the other depending on their proficiency level). This 9-lesson course will help them learn how to use the EnGen platform.

Let them know they can attend a virtual Welcome Session in English or Spanish, which will teach them how to get started and use the platform. EnGen offers these sessions each week at various times. They will receive emails inviting them to these sessions for the first 30 days after enrollment.

#4 - Track Student Engagement

Your Distance Learning Coach will reach out to students about their engagement and offer assistance. Instructors can also review progress in the Admin Portal each week to make sure students are active. Reaching out to students when they aren’t engaging to make sure they understand how to use the platform and are completing units is imperative to improve their English skills.

The Teacher’s Toolkit

EnGen is designed for students to self-direct their time spent on the platform. Instructors are not able to assign courses to students (they must do that themselves) but you can assign single lessons to them as homework, to fill a gap, or assign an EnGen lesson of the day/week. If you’d like to review ideas for the classroom, you will find activities and best practices here. You can also reach out to your Distance Learning Coach for help.
