EnGen Recognized as “Promising Startup” in 2023 North America EdTech 200 List

EnGen is among the high-impact, innovative companies included in the 2023 North America EdTech 200, an annual list compiled by HolonIQ, featuring the most promising EdTech startups in the U.S. and Canada. The recognition is a nod to the timeliness of EnGen’s education and workforce-focused mission — advancing career and economic mobility by addressing language barriers — and to our success in scaling our proven approach to English upskilling.

“Workforce-focused startups like EnGen comprise 40% of this year’s EdTech list, reflecting a critical need to leverage technology to address North America’s acute workforce shortages and upskilling needs at scale. With eight language learning companies on the list, there’s also a growing recognition that connecting workers with language skills – particularly English skills – is foundational to workforce development,” said Katie Brown, Founder and Chief Education Officer at EnGen. “Immigrants, refugees, and speakers of other languages now represent 1 in 5 workers in the U.S. Yet the U.S. currently serves the needs of just 4% of adult English learners. EnGen is committed to closing that gap.”

EnGen’s patented, AI-powered English instruction platform is based on best practices in engaging working adults, offering more than 130 industry-aligned courses that connect learners with English and career skills simultaneously. Lessons can be accessed on demand via smartphone and completed in 10 minutes or less. A recent survey of 6,000 EnGen learners revealed that:

  • 95% had improved their confidence in using English as a result of using EnGen.

  • 93% reported saving time at work as a result of improved English skills.

  • 87% met a career goal like a pay raise or promotion.

Just 13% of the companies in this year’s list were founded less than three years ago, reflecting EnGen’s exceptionally rapid growth and demonstrated impact. Since its launch in 2020, EnGen has partnered with a growing network of Fortune 500 companies, regional employers, post-secondary education institutions, apprenticeship programs, and government entities to offer an easy-to-implement English upskilling solution, advancing economic mobility, workforce inclusion, and talent pipeline development at the scale needed to serve both New American workers and the U.S. workforce.

The North America EdTech 200 is focused on identifying young, fast growing and innovative learning, teaching, and upskilling startups. Organizations were evaluated and scored based on HolonIQ’s proprietary data platform, along with inputs from local market experts. To be eligible, startups must be less than 10 years old, operate in the ClimateTech, EdTech or Health Tech segments, and be independently owned.
