Meet Mirna: Cancer Survivor, EnGen Learner

“It seems like a dream to have the opportunity to learn.”

Mirna thought that rebuilding her life and livelihood in a new country would be her biggest challenge. But she couldn’t have fathomed the additional hardships she would have to overcome.

“A little over two years ago, I was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer and I was literally dying.” But after a tough battle, Mirna successfully became a cancer survivor.

With a new lease on life, Mirna decided she would take this second chance to pursue a new career focused on helping people. She knew that a key part of her education and career advancement was improving her English skills.

Through a partnership between her employer and Guild—a comprehensive education and skilling solution for building talent— Mirna gained access to EnGen.

Since Mirna is drawn to several career focus areas, including IT and phlebotomy, access to EnGen’s 140+ career-aligned pathways has allowed her to explore her interests and to learn workforce-aligned  English at her own pace. In addition to the personalized instruction, Mirna says a key part of the EnGen platform is being able to connect with other people.

“I love the live classes and how I can interact and learn at the same time with people around the world. The teachers are very kind and very patient.”

Access to career-aligned lessons and interactions with EnGen’s instructors, coaches, and other learners has allowed Mirna to quickly grow her English skills to a high intermediate level.

“EnGen has really helped me with my confidence in communicating. I feel more fluent, and my understanding of the language has improved significantly. I love that I can now help my coworkers with translation and assist them with their language needs”

Mirna is not alone. In our recent survey of 2,500 English language learners, 87% reported improved English proficiency and 93% reported more confidence at work and beyond.

As she prepares for her GED and working towards a certification in IT, Mirna continues to work to learn and advance her career.

Mirna’s advice to other English learners? “I recommend everyone who needs to learn from zero or to those who need to improve their English level to join the EnGen platform. In a short time, with dedication, they will achieve results.”

EnGen partners with educational institutions, employers, and other workforce partners to serve tens of thousands of adult English learners like Mirna. Learn how it can work for your organization: https://getengen.com/demo
