Meet Sabrina: ‘EnGen has connected me with the world’

“In my work, I’m always listening to managers and workmates. When I’m problem solving, I need to work with different people from different countries, so talking in English is very important.”

Sabrina came to the United States in 2021. While she immediately understood the need to gain English skills to build connections in her new country, her initial attempts at English learning were not very effective.

“I started studying English in the U.S. only at one level. I took a basic free class for three months.” When Sabrina started working at an Amazon fulfillment center near her home in Texas, however, she was given the opportunity to try EnGen and our real-world, context-driven, career-oriented English learning platform through Amazon’s Career Choice program. Career Choice is an educational and skills training benefit for Amazon employees that pre-pays tuition for English language programs, industry certifications, and college classes.

The results speak for themselves. In just six months of working with EnGen, Sabrina has advanced her English skills to an intermediate level.

Why has EnGen been so effective for Sabrina? She cites the variety of listening, grading, and reading exercises as an important part of her learning. But she also says EnGen’s teachers make a real difference.

“EnGen has different and better teachers. I have the opportunity to talk to different teachers from different countries. The teachers explain different opportunities and personal abilities, like practicing more vocabulary or tackling different exercises. It’s very important that EnGen has very different and effective teachers. The teachers are always smiling. They are great people.”

With nearly 15 years of finance and banking industry experience in her home country, Sabrina is focused on enhancing her English skills to pursue a certificate in Administration and Business Services Certification with continued support from Amazon Career Choice.

But, beyond her career goals, Sabrina says upskilling her English is also vital to her personal life. “It’s a priority for me to live in this country to talk and understand English. To communicate with my daughter’s school, it’s important to understand English.”

Sabrina is among the thousands of learners who have built more confidence in their English language skills through EnGen. According to our most recent learner survey, 95 percent of EnGen learners have gained confidence, 93 percent of learners report improved job skills, and 87 percent of learners have met real-world goals like pay raises or promotions.

Beyond the incredible progress in English skills Sabrina has made, she says one of the most important aspects of her EnGen experience has been her connection with other people in similar situations.

“EnGen has connected me with the world. The most important thing to me is talking with other people. For me it’s a surprise to open the app in the class group and I see people from different countries. I talk with people from Portugal, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Columbia, and more. It’s interesting to talk and listen in English. It’s amazing for me.”
