Welcome, MDC Instructors!

What is EnGen

EnGen is an online learning platform provided by Miami Dade College for learners who want to improve their English skills. Learners can access the platform for free 24/7 through their computer, tablet or mobile phone. Content is tailored to learners’ proficiency level and is self-paced so they can manage their own schedule and review content that is relevant for their personal and professional English learning goals. The platform includes vocabulary review, pronunciation practice, proficiency assessments, and achievement tests.

Please take 30-45 minutes to read this page in its entirety, watch the videos, and review the documents to learn how to use EnGen. Thank you!

Getting Started

#1 - Activate Your EnGen Account

After you have been enrolled in EnGen, you must fully activate your account by completing the Needs Analysis questionnaire. This step is required and gives you access to both learner and admin platforms*. Skipping this step will block your access to the Admin Portal.

*Teachers and Admins must contact their EnGen representative for a password to the Admin Platform.

#2 - Learn About EnGen

Learn about EnGen by reviewing a recent MDC instructor training session. This is everything you need to know about EnGen!

Review EnGen’s course list here. Course outlines are in column C. Instructors can’t assign courses to students, they have to enroll in courses themselves from the “Catalog” tab.

Please refer to the FAQ below and EnGen’s Top 10 Resources for Admins, Teachers, and Coaches if you still have questions about getting started and using both platforms. We also encourage you to explore our newly updated EnGen Resource Center (ERC)!

#3 - Enroll Your Learners

After identifying your group of learners that will be using EnGen and finalizing the content assignment with your EnGen representative, you are ready to enroll your learners. There are 2 options for enrollment:

Option 1: Complete the Official EnGen - MDC Enrollment Roster and return it to manuela@getengen.com to complete a bulk enrollment for your class. This document is “view only” and must be downloaded first. Please do not send PDFs or any unformatted rosters for a bulk enrollment other than the required roster. Doing so will delay enrollment. You must include your students’ MDC email address and not their personal email address due to the SSO integration that is in place. After submitting your enrollment roster, check your email to find information on next steps.

Option 2: You can enroll your own learners individually by following steps on the Enrolling Learners in the Admin Portal - Single or Multiple (video). It is important that you enroll learners in the correct feature group before clicking the submit button.

#4 - Attend Virtual Drop-In Sessions

It is important that you attend the ongoing drop-in sessions that will cover how to navigate the platform, track your learners’ performance on the Admin Platform, and get your questions answered. These sessions take place on a bimonthly basis, every 1st Tuesday of every month at 10am and every 3rd Wednesday of every month at 4:30pm.

If you are unable to attend the drop-in sessions, please attend any of the weekly, recurring Learner Welcome Sessions (LWS) with your learners. You may enroll in a LWS via the EnGen Learner Calendar. You can also watch pre-recorded Learner Information Sessions.

Unfortunately, we are no longer able to conduct private training sessions for individual teachers and admins. Please refer to the options above to learn about EnGen.

#5 - Track Learners Performance

Instructors may monitor their students’ progress in the Admin Portal. We recommend checking the Admin Portal at least once a week during the term.

It is imperative to contact learners if they have not yet engaged to ensure they understand how to use the platform and are completing units to improve their English skills. Learners who demonstrate low or inconsistent engagement throughout the term may be deactivated and/or have their license reassigned to a new student.

The Teacher Toolkit

EnGen is designed for learners to manage their own time spent on the platform. Instructors are not able to auto-assign courses to learners; this must be coordinated via your EnGen representative. However, you may assign single lessons to learners as homework, to provide an extra practice resource, or to assign daily EnGen work.
